Book Description:

Charles Sirtup's, Flyland, is a work of literature that presents the theory that flies are literate and can read and write. Flyland is presented as a translation of a “found book” written by flies. The flies have a religion and Fecal the main character has nagging questions about the existence of Gad, the god of flies. The novel uses the Greek tale of Oedipus as it’s plot foundation along with a side plot of questing to find the illusive true father. On another level the book is about nature and decomposition of all things. The fly is presented as a cleaner, a recycler, and humans are presented as monsters and waste makers who are killing the planet. In the end the flies realize that just as they live off the dead host, the humans are living off the dying or dead planet, and the humans have become, in essence, flies. Primarily the book has a “green” outlook, trying to raise awareness of the destruction of our planet by ignorance and warring political and religious tyrants whose basic motivations are greed and power, not saving the dying earth mother.
